PrEP, which stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a medication that when taken as directed can reduce the chances of becoming HIV Positive through sex by 99% per the CDC.

What is PrEP?
- PrEP is pre-exposure prophylaxis. It is a daily medicine called Truvada® that reduces your chance of getting HIV.
- PrEP can stop HIV from taking hold and spreading through your body.
- Taking PrEP every day reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by more than 90%. It reduces the risk of getting HIV among people who inject drugs by more than 70%.
- You should use condoms with PrEP to reduce the chances of getting HIV from sex even more.
Is PrEP Right for You?
PrEP may help you if you are 18 years old or more, are HIV-negative, and ANY of the following apply to you:
- You are a gay/bisexual man and:
- Have an HIV-positive partner
- Have more than one partner, a partner who has more than one partner, or a partner whose HIV status is unknown and you also:
- Have anal sex without a condom, or
- Recently had a sexually transmitted disease (STD)
- Are a heterosexual and:
- Have an HIV-positive partner
- Have more than one partner, a partner who has more than one partner, or a partner whose HIV status is unknown and you also:
- Don’t always use a condom for sex with people who inject drugs or
- Don’t always use a condom for sex with bisexual men
- You inject drugs and:
- Share needles or equipment to inject drugs
- Recently went to a drug treatment program
- Are at risk for getting HIV from sex
Where do you get PrEP?
You can get PrEP in the STD Clinic if you and your provider decide it is right for you. Appointments for PrEP are on Mondays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; and Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m.–noon and 5–6:30 p.m. Call 919-250-4410 to make an appointment.
After your first appointment, you will come back to the clinic in 30 days for a follow-up. After that, you will need to make an appointment every three months for lab tests and prescription refills.
How much does PrEP cost?
First visit: $48
30-day visit: Free
Visits at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months: $48
You must pay at the time of your appointment. If you do not have payment, your appointment will be rescheduled. Payment is to cover the cost of the co-pay.
Can you get help to pay for PrEP?
Our staff can help you apply for financial aid if you do not have insurance or do not have enough insurance. You will need these documents to apply:
- Proof of income: 2 current pay stubs, current year’s taxes or W2
- Proof of residence: drivers license, current utility bill such as water, cable, electric or land line phone bill (must have your name on the bill)
- Proof of insurance: insurance card if you have insurance.
