Mpox
Mpox is an infection caused by monkeypox virus, an orthopox virus characterized by human-to-human transmission primarily through close skin-to-skin contact. The Mpox virus can be spread person-to-person through close physical contact including but not limited to sex, sharing of contaminated objects such as clothing, and contact with respiratory droplets.
According to the CDC, symptoms of Mpox can include:
- A rash that can look like pimples or blisters that appears on the face, inside the mouth, and on other parts of the body, like the hands, feet, chest, genitals or anus. View examples here.
- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches and backache
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Chills
- Exhaustion
How to Reduce Exposure to Mpox
Avoid skin-to-skin contact with contaminated people, objects, and materials. Strategies to prevent Mpox include increased condom use, decreased number of sex partners, reduced number of one-time sex encounters and decreased frequency of sex with partners met on dating apps, sex venues or group sex.
Anyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, who has been in close, personal contact with someone who has Mpox is at risk.
Vaccine
The vaccine JYNNEOS used against Mpox requires two vaccine doses given 28 days (4 weeks apart), using a standard subcutaneous administration (0.5 mL per dose). The alternative administration is an intradermal dose of 0.1 mL per dose. Both doses are needed to provide maximum protection. You will have maximum protection two weeks after your second dose.
JYNNEOS vaccine is recommended for any person 18 years of age and older who is at risk for Mpox infection.
Wake County currently has a limited supply of no-cost Mpox vaccines available. Once the supply runs out, the Mpox vaccine can be as expensive $270 per dose for a total of $540.
Wake County Public Health offers both walk-in and appointment services for the vaccine.
