Yiddish Penny Songs at the Turn of the Century
About This Event
Newly arrived Jewish immigrants were anxious to become "regular Americans," adopting American popular culture before they'd even learned English. Author and singer Jane Peppler researched the penny songs of this era and found a fascinating representation of the immigrant experience—blueprints for getting ahead, hanky panky between boarders and their landladies, comparisons between the old world and the new. The songs are sometimes tragic but usually riotously funny. Translations will be projected in real-time so you can get all the jokes. No registration required.
