Cool for Wake

Woman controlling the air conditioner.

Cool for Wake is a seasonal weather relief program that provides free fans to vulnerable residents who are adversely affected by extreme summer temperatures between May and September

Households eligible for assistance from the Cool for Wake project include homes where a child, senior or disabled person is living without air conditioning.

This program is made possible through the generosity of community donors, an annual grant from the Duke Energy Foundation and through a partnership with the RRAR REALTOR Giving Network

Get assistance through Cool for Wake

Request a fan

Households without air conditioning that contain a senior citizen (60+) and/or children under age 12 may request to receive a fan through their social worker or service intake. Qualifying households will be issued one 20-inch box fan per household per year.

Please note: Households with air conditioning should not be referred for fans unless the air conditioner is not working.

Request an air conditioner

Each year, a limited number of window-unit air conditioners are available to seniors and children who have a documented medical history of chronic illness affecting their respiratory system (emphysema, COPD, HIV, asthma, etc.). Requests for these units must be accompanied by a written statement from the applicant's physician.

Request financial assistance with your cooling bills

Financial assistance to help with cooling bills may be available during the summer months through the Crisis Intervention Program (CIP).  Applications for financial assistance can be made through the Wake County Energy Assistance Program.
